Yes we all want to be green, but we also want to be warm! After replacing the woodburner (that’s the green bit) we needed another option for warming the rest of the house. First priority is get the insulation right. Whatever you use to warm your house, you need to keep it in as long as possible.
Insulation sorted what are the options for heating? Well Gas and Oil are imported into France and the cost is rising fast. Aside from this, we would have to install a whole new central heating system with all the pipework that goes with it. So why not replace the existing electric heating? Not a bit of it, things have changed radically since the days of the old Economy 7 and France generates most of it’s own electricity which means prices have stayed remarkably stable over the years. The new generation heating systems offer a full centrally controlled way of heating your homr and the appliances themselves work in a similar way to the old gas radiator. We can replace all our hold heaters like for like so no new pipework. We are getting our install done before the next winter sets in so watch this space!

When we bought Noisetieres, we had no idea how cold it would be in winter! The house has old electric heaters in all the rooms and an old insert wood burner in the living room. The old insert didn’t generate a lot of heat as it was mostly glass and the false chimney breast kept in all the heat going up the chimney. Although we were intending to install a central heating system, we still wanted the cosy feel of a real fire. So we opted for the Godin Jurassien. Our very nice local Chimney sweep and son came to fit it and what a great job they did! Wow and does it warm up or what! The Godin is solid cast iron and as soon as you light the fire it heats up like a big radiator – even the chimney flue radiates heat.

The Old Crock What a beauty!

Why the Limousin?
Well it chose us really. We came here for a weeks holiday back in 2003. We visited the south of the region in the area called the Correze and made our way further northwest to the Haute Vienne.
The Haute Vienne is an area of green lush rolling hills, large forests and lots of lakes. Great for mountain biking which is what we love to do. We decided to buy a house here, near to St Junien.
It’s 40 minutes from Limoges airport and all the facilities you need are close by. Over the last three years the area has developed into quite a busy place but still retaining its countryside feel. After coming for lots of holidays to our house, we have decided we want to move here permanently. We will be arriving on 31st March 2007. More soon …..
